Phenergan and The Giant Anaconda: A children's story.

Sixteen years ago this day, I weighed approximately eighteen pounds more than a pregnant gorilla and I had all the personality of a pissed off possum.

My only redeeming quality was that my hair had never been blonder, more permed, or crispier and it was the size, shape, and weight of a 1972 console television.

Yep. Sixteen years ago on this day, I was merely seven days away from giving birth to my son, The Big Dog.

When I got pregnant with Dog, no one was more shocked than me. So shocked was I that ten years after having my daughter there I was - pregnant again, I could only announce my condition to his Father by uttering these beautiful and Hallmarky words:

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."

At thirty years old, (bust out the abacus now - I'll wait), I was convinced no woman since Elizabeth in the Bible had ever been so old and pregnant. I didn't know what to do, so I did the only thing that seemed to make sense at the time.

I puked.

It worked so well as a method of distracting me from my freakish situation that I decided not to stop doing it until I was about seven months pregnant. I threw up so often and so violently during the time I was carrying my son, that the doctor no longer even wanted to see me before being admitted to the hospital. I began to become invested in late night TV in search of a home IV kit that came complete with a complimentary subscription to the Phenergan of the Month Club.

The great news is that the Phenergan usually only worked for 9 seconds. The better news is that I eventually developed some sort of weird side effect wherein I had night terrors. I woke up one night to find a giant Anaconda coiled on top of the covers beneath which my husband slept. Imagine my surprise.

I did what any thinking woman would do when faced with a giant snake sleeping comfortably in her bed. I said a little prayer to Jesus during which I reminded him that I really counted for two lives as opposed to the one that was my Baby Daddy; I promised him to always speak fondly of the sacrifice Baby Daddy had made on our behalf; and I begged him to have the snake do his killing quickly and quietly as I knew hearing snake-chewing sounds would make me start throwing up again.

And then, with the graceful execution of a lumbering wildebeest running for its life, I threw back the covers, screamed to Earl (that's what I called my husband, not the snake) that I was sorry he had to die, and I ran like no other to the living room where upon my arrival, I climbed over the back of the sofa with such force, I flipped it over.

Because Earl was a selfish man and refused to go quietly into that good night, when he was awakened by my exit he ran after me, screaming as loudly as I was even though he had no idea what he was screaming about.

I was not happy to see him standing before me in his tiny, tightie-whities, blood vessels bulging and eyes popping out of his head. All I knew was that in my training and experience as a snake enthusiast, giant Anacondas are quite wily in that they will hide somewhere on your husband's person until you least expect it, at which point they will reach out and swallow you - especially if you are pregnant and smell like vomit and Final Net.

It took quite some time for Earl to convince me that there was no snake stuck to his back or hiding in our bed or pretending to be a scarf hanging in my closet. Truth be told, I'm still not convinced. For all I know, there is a snake who still tells that story at office parties and family gatherings.

So on May 24th, what I want my wonderful son to know above all else is that even though he wasn't planned for, and even though I had to fight a freakishly large imaginary snake to save him, and even though his Dad didn't love him enough to lie still and be eaten alive so that we might live; he is among the Top Two Things I Am Most Proud Of and and the Top Two Things For Which I Am Most Thankful.

I adore the kid. More than he'll ever even be able to understand.

Happy Birthday, D.

Smoker's Savior - Why Are You So Cool?

My son turns 16 in a few days. He's a great kid.. He doesn't do anything wrong really, except maybe once in awhile say "hell." I've tried to explain to him that my Southern Baptist roots dictate if you say the name of the place, you have to spend eternity there. He continues to spit in the face of that logic.

My only concern with Dog (his nickname) is that he is not cool enough. I went to high school in the 80s. I know what it takes to be cool. Unfortunately I can't get him to commit to drinking Boone's Farm and Cold Duck and then to subsequently puke all over a gun named Butch. I keep telling him he's never going to get the cool girls if he doesn't do the cool work.

Der.

But then I saw a series of 100,814 commercials about Smoker's Savior on the TV, and hope sprang forth from deep inside me - very near my uterus from whence he came.

"Dog!" I pleaded. "Please, for the love of Butch, please let me buy you some of those Smoker's Saviors computer cigarettes. Their website says you can smoke them ANYWHERE! It says you should feel free to smoke at your desk, in a restaurant, even on an airplane - anywhere! Have you ANY IDEA how cool it would make you to be the only kid lighting up during Honors English?"

 "I don't smoke, Mom."

"That's the beauty of it. We can get you started for only $99. Chicks dig smokers. Chicks dig boys who smoke ANYWHERE even more."

"I don't smoke, Mom."

"Son! They even come in mint flavor! WHAT is WRONG with you? If I act right now, I can get a durable travel pack for NO EXTRA DOLLARS! No extra dollars, Dog! That's like totally free."

Obviously getting nowhere, I made him watch the commercial with me.  I wanted him to see first hand how outrageously cool these Smokers Savior people are. I mean, come the hell on. You know they're not actors. Actors would have brushed their hair, or put on a clean hat, or not looked like a douche blowing smoke circles. These are REAL people! Real, cool people!

I'm sad to report that even after watching, he won't budge. He refuses to start smoking these uber cool computer battery operated cigarettes. If I'd only had the dedication to smoke & drink while I was pregnant with him, maybe I wouldn't be paying the price now. Dammit.

Possums Will Eat Anything.

I'm in such a weird place in my life right now. I'd love to say I'm at a crossroads, but that implies I have some very clear direction to either side of me and that's not the case. I'm more inclined to want to say I'm at a roundabout.

I can choose to make an exit at some point in the circle and see how that works for me or I can keep going round and round and round.

At the moment, let's just say I feel sort of dizzy.

As I write, I'm at my daughter's house sitting in the baby's room. I should specify there is no actual baby in this room yet. He is currently living at 100 SW. Uterus with an estimated arrival date of July 3. He's a pistol, this one. Kitten's tiny 5'2" body has had a heck of a time trying to accommodate this fella. Today we found out she has hydronephrosis, which is no damn fun. She's in pain and she pees roughly every 1.3 seconds.

I made her banana pudding - cause that's what Southern mommas do when they don't know what else to do.

I took her to IHOP and bought her a man-sized breakfast at 3 in the afternoon. When the waitress asked "bacon or sausage" Kitten said "BOTH!" I just drank my coffee, ate my French Toast and tried to keep my fingers away from the consumption zone.

The only other time I've ever heard noises like I heard coming from my baby girl was when I was married to my second husband living large in rural Hell and I found a possum eating something one of the farm cat's had thrown up.

You're welcome.

Right now, at this very moment, I can hear Kitten & Dog (my son) laughing hysterically from the other room. They each have such distinct laughs, but they share an insane sense of humor, which I like to believe they got at least in part, from me. I adore them so much. They know I love them, of course. I'm just not sure they understand I'd totally make them banana pudding for breakfast from now until forever if it made them happy. That's probably a good thing.

So round and round I continue go. But right now, in this blue room, listening to the most beautiful sound on Earth, it's OK. I'm OK.

I may even try it with my eyes closed.

And a one and a two and a ..... oink.

My life is a whirlwind right now. The good, the bad and the ugly has got me by the genitals and is slinging me around.

Not really by the genitals, but I really wanted to use that word tonight so I had to work it in somehow.

The good: all the footage we shot on my trip to Tampa for our TV show is in the hands of the world's most brilliant editor. I saw about 5 minutes of it yesterday and I LOL'd. It wasn't even that fake LOL that I sometimes do when really I'm just sort of smiling, or at best softly chortling.

The bad: my son is sick and also injured his ankle at football tonight. He's not going to be wheelchair bound or sitting on the sidewalk playing a harmonica and asking for food or anything, so don't openly cry for us quite yet. The bitch of the news here though is that he was exposed to Swine Flu and so now we are all sort of standing around waiting to be swiney.

"Did you just cough? Cause I couldn't tell if it was a real cough or if you sounded like Miss Piggy coughing."

The ugly: my enormous ass in the footage mentioned in "The good". Seriously, I am distraught at my completely gargantuan ass. Like I wake up thinking about my ass and apparently I'm getting ready to go to bed to think about my ass some more. Yes, I knew I'd put on some weight as a result of a lovely little pill I'm taking that does wonderful things for your brain, but sometimes makes the rest of you look like you live in a trailer park. It just didn't hit me between the eyes until I saw myself waddling around no film.

On one hand: never been happier.

On the other hand: my ass. Which is too big for just one hand.

Help me Tom Cruise. I'm exhausted.

Crazy wears blue eye-shadow.

I am insane.

Due to a birth defect present in many children born to Southern women, my 13 year old boy suffers from a mad love of NASCAR. Sure I’m ashamed of him because of it, but the law says I have to love him anyway.

I try to reduce the number of outbreaks every chance I get, but my ex-husband AKA the boy’s father, does everything he can to ensure The Big Dog never overcomes it. There is dirt racing every Friday night and of course, watching fast cars on TV go round and round whenever possible.

So why then for his birthday last month did I purchase for him a ride in a NASCAR at the Kansas Speedway? This would be where the insane part comes in.

It was one thing to buy the certificate for the 15th of June when the 15th of June was weeks away. It is another thing to actually watch my little boy strap in a vehicle this afternoon that promises to go about 175 mph.

I couldn’t get him a nice sweater or a slinky? Everybody knows a slinky is fun for a girl and a boy. A nice wool sweater only enhances the amusement.

Momentarily he and I will drive the distance to the Big City and I will feed his disease in a way it’s never been fed. I imagine he will leave there firmly convinced that college can wait, track is for sissies and wondering aloud which religion has the best direct line to God so he can join up and ask The Big Guy for a race car and a fire suit.

Throughout my life I have done some idiotic things in the name of love but this was one of the biggest. I would consider faking a serious illness to avoid it, perhaps even throw up a little blood, but I am convinced he would hitch a ride with the first Speedway bound vehicle he happened upon. As Michael Jackson drives around our neighborhood frequently, I’d better get going. I have to bust the tube top out of storage, paint on plenty of blue eye-shadow and make sure I have enough time to pick up a pack of smokes for Mommy and some Redman for the boy.

Oh my sweet lord. I think I really am going to vomit blood.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Probably the best "love song" ever in the history of the entire world.
